Thomas Cant is a versatile and hardworking forward for the Newcastle Knights, recognised for his leadership, resilience, and steady rise through the club’s development system. Born in East Maitland, he began his junior rugby league journey with the East Maitland Griffins before entering the Knights pathway.

Cant progressed through every stage of the Knights’ junior structure, Harold Matthews Cup in 2018, SG Ball from 2019 to 2021, and finally captaining the Jersey Flegg Cup side in 2022, leading them all the way to a Grand Final appearance. His strong leadership and consistent work ethic saw him selected in both of Newcastle’s NRL pre‑season trials the following year, earning him a well‑deserved NRL debut in Round 3 of the 2023 season against the Dolphins, becoming Knight #342.

In the 2024 season, Cant delivered a standout campaign in the NSW Cup, captaining the Knights in 16 matches and showcasing exceptional consistency on both sides of the ball. His efforts were recognised when he was awarded NSW Cup Player of the Year at the club’s end‑of‑season awards. This breakout season helped pave the way for increased NRL involvement the following year.

Cant’s growth continued into 2025, where he made 18 NRL appearances in an important development year for the club. His increasing value to the Knights was rewarded when he signed a two‑year contract extension through to the end of the 2026 season, reinforcing his future within Newcastle’s forward pack.

Standing 181 cm and weighing 96 kg, Cant is known for his tenacity, work rate, and defensive reliability, comfortably playing as a second‑rower or lock. With experience across every level of the Knights system and an expanding NRL résumé, he continues to be viewed as one of Newcastle’s most dependable and internally‑developed talents.
