Player Bio
Manaia Waitere is a skilful and elusive playmaker who has emerged as one of the most promising young five‑eighths in the game. He began his rugby league journey with the Como Crocs before being picked up by the Cronulla Sharks, where he enjoyed a strong developmental run. Between 2021 and 2023, Waitere played 37 Jersey Flegg games, crossing for 14 tries and showcasing the creativity and running threat that would become trademarks of his game.
In 2024, Waitere signed with the Canberra Raiders, immediately becoming an influential member of their Knock‑On Effect NSW Cup side. His first year in green featured 23 appearances and 8 tries, establishing him as one of the squad’s most reliable attacking weapons. He continued that form into 2025, earning elevation to the Raiders’ NRL development list.
Waitere’s breakthrough moment arrived in Round 27 of the 2025 NRL season, when he made his NRL debut for Canberra against the Dolphins at Kayo Stadium. Starting in the centres, marking a major career milestone despite the team’s heavy defeat.
Originally contracted to Canberra until the end of 2026, Waitere was viewed as an exciting long‑term spine option. However, in late 2025, the Raiders granted him an immediate release, allowing him to sign a one‑year deal with the Melbourne Storm for the 2026 NRL season, where he will continue his pursuit of a permanent first‑grade role.
