Player Bio
Hayden Buchanan is an exciting young centre for the St George Illawarra Dragons, renowned for his explosive speed, defensive reliability, and calm decision‑making under pressure. A proud Gerringong Lions junior, Buchanan is part of the club’s remarkable production line of emerging NRL talent. Before reaching first grade, he excelled across the Dragons’ pathways, including NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg, and was selected for the Australian Schoolboys in 2023 while attending Kiama High School.
Buchanan made his NRL debut in Round 23 of the 2025 season against the Cronulla Sharks at Jubilee Stadium, earning his call‑up after Mat Feagai was ruled out with injury. He delivered a spectacular debut performance, scoring a try, providing a try assist, making 18 tackles, recording 110 running metres, and breaking two tackles in an 80‑minute showing. His impact was instrumental in the Dragons’ 22–14 victory and instantly marked him as one of the club’s most promising young backs.
As one of several Gerringong juniors to reach the NRL in 2025, Buchanan credits fellow Dragons teammates and childhood friends Dylan Egan and Hamish Stewart for helping drive his development, Egan even driving him to early academy sessions when he didn’t yet have a licence. He has quickly become part of a strong cohort of South Coast‑bred players making their mark at the elite level.
In addition to his club achievements, Buchanan has represented New South Wales at Under‑19 Origin level, showcasing his maturity and physical presence well beyond his age. With his combination of athleticism, composure, and strong representative pedigree, Hayden Buchanan is widely regarded as a future long‑term centre for the Red V.
